Water at Risk: Tribal Leaders’ Perspective
What: Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman David Archambault II and Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin Chairman Gary Besaw will be in Chicago on August 17 to discuss the issues facing Native communities, including tribal sovereignty and environmental issues – specifically water rights – which both affect Illinois.
They will address today's challenges surrounding water rights on sovereign tribal lands from a legal, economic and environmental perspective with local business leaders and community groups.
The discussion will be moderated by Doug Kiel, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History at Northwestern University and a citizen of the Oneida Nation.
Featured in the discussion will be the current legal and environmental struggles of the Menominee Tribe with the Back 40 Mine Project in Michigan and the Dakota Access Pipeline controversy concerning the Standing Rock Sioux. The Dakota Access Pipeline began commercial service in June, transporting crude oil from the Bakken/Three Forks production areas in North Dakota to a storage and terminalling hub outside Pakota, Illinois. The dialogue will provide a rare insight into these national and global issues from a Native viewpoint, and address how the issues impact our region and our planet.
